Learn the Age-Old Art of Swordplay: Sign Up for Fencing Classes at YMCA
Plus, Free “Try Fencing Day” on September 13
Looking for a new fall sport? Try fencing!
Classes for adults and youth ages 8 and up will be held Friday, September 20 – October 25 at the Oneida branch of the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley, 701 Seneca St.
Register by September 16 on the YMCA’s website, www.ymcatrivalley.com.
Classes are limited to 12 students per class. Members and non-members are welcome. The cost is $90 for YMCA members with a sibling discount of $5 off. Non-members pay $110.
Expert fencer Coach ‘Lubo’ will teach the style of epee including the basic skills and techniques needed to become a fencer.
The five-week program includes:
- Skills and techniques
- Footwork exercises
- Strategy exercises
- Fun games and matches
Classes for beginners run from 5-5:50pm and advanced students meet from 6-6:50pm each week.
The community is invited to try fencing at the Y’s free “Try Fencing Day,” Friday, September 13 at 5:30pm. Everyone, age 8 and up is welcome.
Coach Lubomir Kalpaktchiev is a 25-year veteran instructor and qualifying competitor in international fencing, winning the gold medal eight times from 1993 to 2005 in regional and international tournaments. In addition to the YMCA, Coach ‘Lubo’ teaches classes at Syracuse Musketeers Fencing Center and Syracuse University.
