Madison County Historical Society's Annual Luncheon and Program

 

Madison County Historical Society’s Annual Luncheon and Program will be held on Sunday, November 4 at Hipstir Cafe.

The luncheon and program are open to MCHS membership and the public. Reservations are required by October 30.

The Madison County Historical Society cordially invites all of its members and the public to the society’s Annual Luncheon and Programon Sunday, November 4 at 1 pm at Hipstir Café located at 125 Farrier Ave in Oneida. The Madison County Historical Society is proud to present guest speaker, Dr. Norman K. Dann who will present,Ballots, Bloomers, and Marmalade: The Life of Elizabeth Smith Miller.

 

Dann’s program, Ballots, Bloomers, and Marmalade: The Life of Elizabeth Smith Millerwill cover the early life of Elizabeth in Peterboro with her reform-minded parents, her education, and her residences, and then focus on her suffrage activities to gain the ballot for women, and her marmalade activities to support women’s education.

Norman K. Dann, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus at Morrisville State College, where he taught Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Environmental Science from 1966 – 1999. Living in a cottage formerly on the Gerrit Smith Estate, Norm is a Gerrit Smith scholar and author of several books on the Smith Family of Peterboro.  Dr. Dann is a founder and member of the Cabinet of Freedom for the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, a Steward of the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark, a 25 year member of the Annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend Committee, and Treasurer of the Peterboro Area Museum.

The harvest luncheon to be served at 1:00 pm includes entrée choices of: beef pot roast; baked chicken; or a vegan dish, served with mashed potatoes and carrots. For dessert, chocolate cake, coffee and tea will be served. Tickets for the annual luncheon and program are $20. Reservations are required by October 30.  The Madison County Historical Society will be selling raffle tickets throughout the event. Prizes range from the many handmade craft items donated by the talented craft artisans at this year’s 54th Annual Madison County Craft Festival. Tickets for the raffle items are $1 each or 6 for $5. The winning tickets will be drawn at the annual meeting; winner(s) need not to be present to win. All proceeds benefit restoration at the Madison County Historical Society. Other ongoing raffle tickets will also be sold throughout the event.

After the program there will be an opportunity to purchase copies of Dr. Norm K. Dann’s book, Ballots, Bloomers, and Marmalade: The Life of Elizabeth Smith Millerand to request the author’s signature.The lunch starts at 1:00 pm. The program follows the luncheon at approximately 2:00 pm. The historical society’s headquarters are housed in an 1849 Gothic Revival Villa that is listed on the State and National Registry of Historic Places.
